Margaret Anderson Kelliher Responds to Charlottesville Anniversary
Margaret Anderson Kelliher Stands Up for Reproductive Health and Choice
Just one year after Charlottesville, white nationalists are planning to take their message of hatred to Washington, DC.
Today and every day, we must stand together against racism, anti-Black violence, anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, bigotry, and xenophobia. We must commit to educating each other on the systemic issues that lead to violence.
Today we should also pause to remember Heather Heyer who lost her life in the counter-protest. It is important to recognize the important role counter protesters are playing in standing up to hate speech and white supremacy activists and organizations.
I stand in solidarity with any community who is under attack by hate groups and will work with racial justice organizations to work to eliminate discrimination and promote a more inclusive America.

When all people have full control over their own health and reproductive freedom, they gain the agency to live by their own choices. We should all have access to the health care we need, no matter what.
I strongly support efforts to provide better access to contraception and ensure that people are empowered to make their own decisions about when to start and when to grow their families. While in the Minnesota Legislature, I was the chief author of bills to provide emergency contraception in emergency rooms. However, family planning shouldn’t just be an emergency decision.
I stand with organizations like Planned Parenthood that provide affordable, quality care to communities across the nation. In my own family, I was a client of Planned Parenthood in rural Minnesota as a student, and proudly share this with others. My own niece’s life was saved by a Planned Parenthood visit in Mankato where she was diagnosed with cancer in her early 20s. She is a survivor today because of early care and treatment: first for a contraceptive visit, but ultimately for her health. I am appalled by Republicans’ repeated attempts to defund Planned Parenthood and will oppose any efforts to deprive anyone of access to the care and services they deserve.
I have always been a strong proponent of health care freedom, and I worked throughout my tenure in the Minnesota Legislature to protect women’s fundamental right to choose. I was the chief author of the Reproductive Privacy Act, which would codify Roe v. Wade in Minnesota and prevent the state from interfering in reproductive health decisions.
As Speaker of the House, I appointed pro-choice chairs to key health and budget committees, and I presided over narrow floor defeats of anti-choice amendments, breaking tie votes on legislation such as a proposed restriction to state-funded health programs. I also have been personally supportive of young doctors training to perform comprehensive reproductive services at the University of Minnesota.
Our health has been repeatedly attacked under this administration and Trump’s Supreme Court nominee Judge Kavanagh could affect decisions for the next half-century. In Congress, I will work with our Senators to fight this and any other attempts to undermine reproductive rights.

Margaret Anderson Kelliher’s Campaign for Congress has Broad Support from Legislators From Across CD5
Donald Trump showed his true colors at his Helsinki press conference with Vladimir Putin. I am outraged to see the President violate his oath of office and side with Putin and the Russians over our own Intelligence community and national interests. I want to go to Washington to hold this Administration accountable. We need to make sure our election systems are free, fair and secure from Russian interference. Furthermore, it’s time for Congress to move House Resolution 621, Impeaching Donald J. Trump, President of the United States, of high crimes and misdemeanors forward and begin the proceedings of impeachment.

Statement on Trump’s Visit to Minnesota
Last night, our community confronted the reoccurrence of a Minneapolis Police shooting. I first want to extend my condolences to the family of Thurman Blevins. We must do better to de-escalate police and civilian confrontations. That is why I am asking that Mayor Frey not rely only on the BCA investigation but conduct an independent investigation of Mr. Blevins death and the Minneapolis Police Department.
Margaret Anderson Kelliher issued the following Statement on Trump's visit to Minnesota:
"Vulnerable children and families are experiencing the terror of being torn apart at the Mexico-United States border as a result of the Donald Trump administration's unethical policies. In the midst of this crisis that could be resolved by his singular action, Trump is campaigning in Duluth, Minnesota. He is literally positioning himself as geographically far as possible from the families whose suffering he has caused. Instead of parading around Duluth touting failed economic policies, the President should stop tearing children from their parents in what the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights calls an illegal action and serious violation of the rights of children.
We must do better. In Congress, you can count on me to bring Trump and his cronies to the Oversight Committee and hold him accountable for his blatant disregard for our values."
